Delhi Police’s Special Cell has questioned Delhi University (DU) professor Apoorvanand in the case of violence in north-east Delhi. The police gave this information on Tuesday. Professor of Hindi at the university, Apurvananda said that he spent five hours in the office of the special cell and during this time the police also confiscated his mobile.

He said in an online statement, “On Monday, August 3, 2020, I was asked by the Special Cell of Delhi Police to appear for the investigation of FIR No. 59/20 related to the violence in north-east Delhi in February 2020. . I spent five hours there. Delhi Police also deemed it necessary to confiscate my phone for investigation.

He appealed to the police to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry into the matter. He said that while respecting and supporting the right of police officers to conduct a full, impartial and thorough investigation, one can only hope that the investigation is aimed at peaceful demonstrations of citizens and inciting violence against the people of North East Delhi Will remain focused 

53 people died in Delhi riots

Significantly, after clashes between supporters and opponents of the citizenship law, communal riots broke out in North East Delhi’s Jaffarabad, Maujpur, Babarpur, Ghonda, Chandbagh, Shiv Vihar, Bhajanpura, Yamuna Vihar areas on 24 February.

At least 53 people were killed and more than 200 people were injured in the violence. At the same time government and private property was also severely damaged. Huge mobs blew up houses, shops, vehicles, a petrol pump and threw stones at local people and police personnel.

Meanwhile, Delhi Police head constable Ratan Lal, who hails from Sikar, Rajasthan, was shot dead during the violence in Gokalpuri on 24 February and several policemen including DCP and ACP were seriously injured. Also, after killing IB officer Ankit Sharma, his body was thrown into the drain.
