The 2014 Austrian film of the same name, Goodnight Mommy, is being remade for Amazon Prime Video by director Matt Sobel. The remake, which features Naomi Watts, falls short of the original. Everything is overly explained and watered down to the point where it no longer has any suspense or gore. I much prefer the original Goodnight Mommy by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz’s cinematography over the remake. In all honesty, the remake feels very superfluous, and the modifications made to the original are not for the better.

Goodnight Mommy Plot Summary: What Is The 2022 Film About?
Elias and Lukas, twin boys, pay their mother a visit at her country home. The children are finally paying their mother a visit after a long separation between their parents. Their mother has undergone plastic surgery, and her face is bandaged, so she does not appear as she usually does. She gave them instructions as soon as they arrived, telling them not to go to the barn, leave the blinds open, go into her office or bedroom, or make noise. Elias saw their mother’s behaviour changed right away. She didn’t set rules; others did. When she refused to sing them a goodnight song, they began to doubt whether she was really their mother behind the bandage, even though they admitted that perhaps the surgery had made her bitter. The mother had always sang the children to sleep, but this time she objected. As the days went by, their conviction that the woman they were residing with was not their mother grew stronger. Elias had drawn him and Lukas holding their mother’s hands, which she tore apart. Their mother always kept them in storage. This was a surprise. Elias made the decision to examine the barn. He thought his mother was concealing something. Old toys and comic books were there in the barn, but Elias saw blood on the wall. Putting it down, Lukas suggested that it might simply be red paint.
When the twins tried to call their father, their mother learned about it and took away their phone. The twins made the decision to leave. They gathered their belongings and fled to a neighbouring residence for safety. The owner didn’t appear to reside there, but the brothers chose to stay because it was pouring outside. When the police arrived and discovered them there, they awoke Elias from his nap. The owner called the police to see whether anyone had trespassed on his property after seeing movement through the motion sensors. The lads made an effort to convince the police that the woman they were sharing an apartment with was a fake and not their mother. When their mother called the police later, the officers returned them to their house. Her interview with the police officer reveals that although their mother was famous once upon a time, it had since diminished. She told the police officers a falsehood, saying she didn’t hit her kid with her hand when in fact she had smacked Elias because he wouldn’t accept her as his mother. She spoke with the police about the problems she was having with her son, but we are not allowed to hear their exchange. Now, the issue was out of our hands. The identical twins were aware that they needed to depart, but first they had to look for their mother. Knowing that her medication made her sleepy, they restrained her and interrogated her about where their true mother may be. They had a plan to get away and find their mother, who had always loved them no matter what.
What Does The Black Creature Symbolize?
The motherly figure incites anxiety and unease. Her face is not revealed until about halfway through the movie. Is she really who she says she is under the bandage? When her son flees the house, she takes off her bandage. She made the decision with the knowledge that she might encounter strangers (the police officers). The mother was once a well-known character, but she is no longer significant. Her attempt to feel good about herself is the plastic surgery. She underwent changes as a result of her divorce from her husband and an accident that is revealed at the film’s conclusion. She desired a fresh start, but the past would not leave her alone. She wanted to be a devoted mother while also wanting to be in charge. Elias’s declaration that she wasn’t his mother caused her to lose her composure. She had been denied fame and love, and when her son had also been denied motherhood, she was at her breaking point.
Elias frequently saw his mother in his dreams. She wasn’t his mother, though. She was a devil below the bandage and clothes. She changed into a black demonic beast in his dream. Her skin split open, exposing her shadowy interior. She would crouch on the ground in an effort to grab Elias. Elias said that the woman he shared a home with was not his mother. She was a supernatural being who desired to eat him; she was not even human. Elias was persuaded by Lukas that she wanted to separate them and that everything she did was aimed at doing so. The twins would fight any demonic influence and find a method to stay together. They would not let it break their link.
Goodnight Mommy Ending Explained: What Had Happened At The Barn? Does The Mother Survive?
In order to challenge his mother about being his biological mother, Elias chained her to the bed. He resisted accepting her as his mother. She expressed regret for her previous errors, but Lukas remained unconvinced. Lukas made preparations for his intended escape from the residence with Elias. However, Elias was not prepared to abandon their mother. Why weren’t her eyes green like they used to be in photos, he questioned her. She claimed that she used coloured lenses and that she had them in her bag in an effort to persuade him. When Lukas looked through the bag, he was certain that the lens was missing. Lukas claimed that the mother was lying and that it was pointless to question her. Her sobs didn’t disturb him; however, Elias started to get nostalgic. The police arrived to check on them in the interim. He told them a fib about his mother being away from the house. His response did not satisfy the police, but they lacked the time to look into it.
With their mother bound to the bed and taped shut, Lukas and Elias departed their house. Elias told Lukas a falsehood, claiming he had run home because he had forgotten his toothbrush. He discovered the lens after searching the luggage. He was aware that Lukas had misled him. He was asked to trust Lukas, who was standing behind him, rather than what his mother had stated. It was enough for him. Lukas was shoved aside as he went into his mother’s room and locked the door. He released her from the rope and sobbed in his mother’s arms, confessing how Lukas had been taking advantage of him all along. His mother held him close and made an effort to calm him down. Elias requested that his mother assist Lukas. His mother invited him to go with her to the barn in the interim. In the interim, Elias was unable to locate Lukas. He could sense the paralysing terror as he got closer to the barn. Although his mother urged him to look at the blood-stained wall, he did not want to confront the truth. She reminded him that he was handling a loaded firearm while playing with it. He accidentally shot Lukas, and as a result, he passed away. She wanted him to understand the difference between reality and imagination. He was unable to accept the reality and pleaded with his mother to stop pressuring him to confront it. He shoved his mother off the incline while yelling at her to halt. She fell to the ground, and the hay and the woods caught fire from the lantern. Elias fled to safety as the barn caught fire. It was too much for him to handle, and he was finding it difficult to understand what had happened. He spotted his mother when he raised his head. She was untouched by the fire, and Lukas was standing behind her. The three of them left together, just like in the illustration Elias had created, and she extended her hand to Elias.
The loss of his identical twin brother, Lukas, was too much for Elias to bear. He began to live in denial in order to cope with the loss. He was in a deluded state and thought that Lukas was always by his side. His mother resisted joining in with the game. Lukas started considering his mother as the devil to preserve his fantasy since she refused to acknowledge his presence. He did not want to abandon the security of his fantasy because he knew that doing so would force him to face the truth. He convinced himself that the bloodstain on the barn was just red paint because of this. He didn’t trust his mother, and he wanted to leave the house. He had to decide between his fantasy world, which included Lukas, and the actual reality, which included his mother. Despite his cries for assistance, he eventually became unable to accept the truth and pushed his mother away. His mother started to appear in his make-believe world. He pretended that the incident at the barn never happened; it was all just a horrible dream because he could not accept that he was somehow accountable for his mother’s passing. Along with his mother and brother, he left. Now that his world was in harmony, he also had the support of the people he loved.
Goodnight Mommy helps people who are damaged. The mother underwent surgery to regain her youthful appearance after losing her son and subsequently divorcing her husband. But Elias’ actions repeatedly brought to mind the disaster and how her almost ideal existence was ruined. Elias was chastised by her for constantly chatting to Lukas by being abusive. Elias, on the other hand, experienced a traumatic event when he was a small child. After his brother died, Lukas refused to face reality and created a fantasy world in which he was still alive. He had two distinct minds. He made decisions based on his own perspective as well as Lukas’. Elias felt isolated without his sibling, and the separation from the mother figure made it worse. His dream world served as a means of coping with his loneliness and bereavement.
