In the novel Our Beloved Summer, two high school sweethearts who had split up five years prior made up. Kook Yeon Su and Choi Ung cross paths once more, first for a work project and then to film a documentary about them. In high school, they collaborated on a documentary that ultimately led to the beginning of their relationship. Once more giving them an excuse to reunite is the documentary. It wasn’t as charming and vivacious as high school, though. In order to get over their current challenges and comprehend one another, they had to develop as people. The show is more than just a love tale; it also shows the personal development of Ung, Yeon Su, and their friends.
Choi Ung The Introvert
Ung is the only child of his restaurant-owning parents, who have named each of their establishments in honour of their beloved son. Ung has never spoken out loud and had few friends until meeting Kim Ji Ung. He was not academically inclined, although he did like to read and draw. He never pursued a profession because his goal was to live a quiet life free from bustle. He has realised his ambition, but in reality, he works as an artist under the alias Ko-o. Ung always had a passion for drawing, but he became much more so after his separation with Yeon Su.
He finally met Yeon Su again because of Ung’s paintings. Ung had mixed feelings for Yeon Su, but he continued to work with her, exposing his true identity to the public. Being in the spotlight caused his life of serenity and peace to become unstable. He hasn’t raised his head until now out of dread of failing. He was afraid he would let his adoptive parents down. Ung, who had a childlike demeanour, discovered more about himself as he was filming the documentary. In the end, he realised that he was still in love with Yeon Su. He boldly made the decision to abandon his insecure self and pursue a high school goal.
Ung adored his family, despite his slowness to pick up on people’s moods. Ji Ung, his closest buddy, was like family to him. Ung appeared awkward and unapproachable to people because he had little to no social life, but he managed to gain notoriety anyhow. Even if he had flaws, his loved both for who he was as a person and as an artist by his admirers. Ung’s development demonstrates to us that once you leave your comfort zone, the world is in your grasp.
Kook Yeon Su Unapologetically Ambitious
Kook Although Yeon Su was at the top of her class, she was alone. She couldn’t afford the luxury of having pals. It demanded Yeon Su’s time, focus, and money—all of which were valuable. She lived solely with her grandmother while growing up without parents. The debt that Yeon Su’s parents left behind caused them both to struggle financially. Yeon Su had to work several part-time jobs in addition to her studies if she wanted to graduate first in her class. She even consented to participate in the documentary since she was paid to. Her primary objective was to amass a large sum of money and eliminate the debt.
Due of her insecurity, she had ended her relationship with Ung. As time went on, she came to see how much Ung’s lifestyle and hers diverged. Ung was wealthy and unaspired. Because of her poor condition and her frantic desire to earn a living as they grew up, she believed Ung would not like her. She had always felt unworthy of what she had. She felt bad because Ung brought her the only joy in her life. How could love be a part of her dreadful life? But after they reconciled, she made a sincere effort to cherish and maintain their union.
She had been acting as though she had no choice, but one action permanently altered her perspective on life. She received a job offer from France at the same time that Ung urged her to travel with him to France, but she choose to stay in Korea. She had put in a lot of effort since she was a high school student, and now all she wanted to do was live and enjoy the life she had chosen. She was content with herself and the way her life was going; she no longer felt insecure.
We frequently feel uneasy about one aspect of ourselves or another, including our appearance, social standing, financial situation, personal style, and other factors. We need to be genuine rather than being sad. Genuinely loving people will always be there for us, just like Yeon. Su had a limited group of close relatives and friends. Despite being little, it was still present. They embraced her for who she was; she didn’t have to attempt to fit in.
Kim Ji Ung The Workaholic
TV producer Kim Ji Ung specialises on producing documentaries. His coworkers frequently avoid working on projects with him since he is a challenging guy to deal with. Ji Ung is disciplined and committed to his work, but his personality is reserved. He has only ever confided in his longtime friend Ung, if at all. His mother’s absence from him as a child is the cause of this conduct. His mother arrived late and departed early. He seldom ever ate his mother’s cooking, and for lunch and supper, he almost always brought his own food. He continued this behaviour until adulthood, favouring packaged meals over freshly prepared food.
His house grew less lonely once he made friends with Ung, and he even got to enjoy home-cooked meals prepared by Ung’s mother. Ung was largely silent and immature, but Ji Ung had to grow up quickly. He didn’t have a family member he could lean on for support, either mentally or physically. He became emotionally distant from others as a result of this. In high school, he harboured feelings for Yeon Su, but he was unable to tell her about them. Later, he felt bad for liking his friend’s girlfriend. His escape was his job. He preferred to observe individuals from behind the lens in order to avoid becoming emotionally invested in their private affairs.
Ji Ung eventually moved on from his long-term unrequited love but never confessed to Yeon Su. He also put his mother’s resentment and repentance aside and filmed a documentary on her. Life does not always give us what we desire, but it always gives us what we deserve, when we need it. Ji Ung’s greatest sadness was for his mother, and filming a documentary on her offered him the chance to find solace before she permanently left this world.
NJ Unintentionally Controversial Celebrity
NJ is a vocalist who rose to fame as an idol at a young age. Despite her success in popularity, wealth, and celebrity status, she is frequently ridiculed online for everything she does. She had a demanding work schedule all the time, but she was becoming sick of it. She had to live a very guarded life because no matter what she did, there was always some controversy manufactured around her. She always made an effort to highlight her positive traits, but this was always perceived as acting. She purchased Ung’s sketches because she perceived some solace in them. As a result of this, they became friends, and NJ later developed feelings for Ung. NJ was a well-known celebrity who had a large following. Men would do anything to impress her, and she dated frequently, but Ung wasn’t into her.
NJ persisted in pursuing Ung because she felt safe chatting to him. She was adamant that she wouldn’t befriend boys and would only date them. She was raised to live the celebrity lifestyle because she was a star from a young age, which prevented her from ever making any real friends. All she needed was a buddy to talk to because fame brought with it hatred and criticism, but she never realised that. Ung was generous and often offered her counsel and good company. NJ came to the realisation that her desire to live the famous lifestyle was keeping her from experiencing the emotions and interacting with others as a normal person. She gives up attempting to please others, upholding an image, and only only presenting her best side to the camera. To defeat her detractors and enemies, she lost all fear and displayed her snarky and vicious sides in public.
She also had a change of heart and welcomes Ung as her first-ever friend. She transgressed the limits she had established for herself. She was able to escape her miserable existence by being fearlessly herself. Only you will burn if you continue to cling to your inner fire.
Our Beloved Summer is a charming and colourful story about how people from various origins may change. The stories of each character are based on unique, weak human emotions like love, trust, and empathy.
