Following the conclusion of the same-named television series’ last season, David Hollander’s crime drama Ray Donovan: The Movie was made available. The connection between Ray Donovan and his father, Mickey Donovan, is the main subject of the movie. To strengthen the father-son relationship, the movie cuts back and forth between the past and the present. The Donovan brothers used to live in Boston, where a large portion of the movie is set, and as a result, Boston has a big impact on the characters’ decisions today. The movie takes the audience on an emotional journey.
Ray Donovan: The Movie Plot Summary
The movie makes references to the series’ last season while fusing it with the current circumstances. In light of the fact that Ray appears to have killed his father, he chooses to speak with Dr. Amiot one last time. When Mickey and Smitty met with Kevin Sullivan to arrange the sale of the stocks in the previous season, Smitty’s death was the result.
Bridget Donovan, Ray Donovan’s daughter, was crushed. Bridget and Smitty had even discussed returning to Los Angeles. Mickey Donovan fled from the shootout while carrying the bag containing the stocks he had obtained by blackmailing Kevin for Jim Sullivan’s life. With the tracking device he had hidden in the briefcase, Ray could locate Mickey.
When Molly Sullivan asks Ray what happened to her father, he is unable to provide an answer. After all, Ray had killed her father after learning that Jim had caused his sister’s pregnancy and compelled her to commit suicide. After shooting Decan, a plan was formed for Deryll to flee the country; a new passport would be given to him, and he had to do it covertly. Mickey said that it was a crime of passion because Declan had slain his girl when Matty questioned why Deryll shot Declan. Mickey turned to his old friend Matty for assistance since he was now determined to find a way to extract the 20 million from the stock documents he held.
The Donovan brothers studied their family’s history while Mickey aspired to make money. They discussed their grandpa. Daryll suggested that Mickey’s upbringing in a whorehouse and daily beatings might have contributed to his development into the person he was.
How Did Ray Betray His Father In The Past?
Ray was reminded of the past as he began to follow his father to Boston. The Donovan brothers were broken by Bridget’s suicide, and Ray recalled the commotion Mickey had made outside the church when he had been late for the prayer session. After Ray accused his father of neglecting his daughter, Mickey and Ray got into a fight.
Ray followed Matty as he searched for the briefcase to give it back to Molly in the present. As soon as he walked into the tavern, he was told he wasn’t welcome. Matty and Mickey intended to keep Ray away from the company because they were interested in making money off of stocks. Ray recalled Abby telling him once that his father was a romantic and that he enjoyed being alive. The question Abby had long ago asked him bothered him continually. She questioned if he shared her joy of life. Even during his final telephone chat with Dr. Abiot, he brought up this memory.
Ray reflected on his background and recalled the day Mickey had suggested an idea while a Hollywood movie was being filmed nearby. Sean Walker engaged Mickey as his technical consultant after speaking with Ezra Goldman. He also talked about how he could employ Jim and his group to serve as the film crew’s protection. Ray was hired as actor Sean Walker’s bodyguard. Mickey and Sean had developed a close friendship. Sean learned the Southern way from Mickey. Sean began snorting the coke Mickey supplied as he became entirely absorbed in his method acting. Things took a tragic turn one night when Ezra Goldman asked Ray to keep an eye on Sean.
Ray followed Sean, Mickey, and Colleen—his girlfriend who was open to alternative relationships—when they went into the bar to have fun. After observing that Mickey and Sean had no intention of leaving, the bartender trusted Ray to shut down the establishment. After several rounds of coke and drink, Mickey collapsed; he left his revolver on the table unattended. Sean snatched up the gun and began acting like Mickey, but in the process, he accidentally shot Colleen, killing her. Sean was in tears because he feared the revelation of his crime would ruin his career. Sean was urged by Ray to leave the establishment and to keep his experience private.
Ray made it appear as though Mickey had killed the victim, and the police were alerted of this. The sound of the police arriving at the scene roused Mickey up. Ray saw Colleen’s passing as a chance to exact revenge on his absentee father for his negligence. He was never going to be the kind of dad Ray could look up to. His whole life, this past followed him.
Why Did Molly Shoot Ray?
The present was not as reassuring as it had been as the past was being revealed. Ray used the tracking device to follow Mickey. He ultimately discovered Mickey and Matty together with other goons. Despite being hurt, Ray managed to fight back and shoot everyone, including Matty. Ray ran out of ammunition just as he was about to kill his dad. Mickey felt bad for Ray, but Ray decided to go.
Ray’s knees had been hit by a gunshot. When he asked Bunch for assistance, he discovered that his daughter was also in Boston. Bunch had been left at the department shop when Bridge stole his car. In order to meet him at the motel where he was staying, Ray suggested Bunch to take his car, which he had left at the station. Ray requested Bunch to wait there for Bridge when he got to the motel, but in the meantime, Bunch was determined to track down Mickey. He got a call from Molly informing him that Mickey had called Kevin and requested that he purchase the stocks he owned.
When Ray arrived at Molly’s house, she let him know that Mickey had already left but had saved all the money for Ray. Molly questioned Ray’s motivation. She thought he only did it for the money. Molly fired a shot into Ray’s stomach as he prepared to depart. Ray got involved in an accident despite being able to drive his car and depart. Knowing his son had been shot, Mickey eventually made his way to help.
Who Shot Mickey?
Ray was driven to a motel, but Mickey asked him to go to the hospital because of his serious injury. Due to the amount of bleeding, Mickey was aware that Ray did not have long to live when he refused to go to the hospital. He said he left Ray the entire sum of money since he deserved the entire globe. He was grateful that Ray was an angel. Mickey was still appreciative of him for supporting the family while he was incarcerated. When Ray was a boy, he used to leap into the pool, knowing that his father would save him if he drowned. Ray was moved to tears. He desired to admit his prior transgression. Nevertheless, he ended up singing the song his father had sang.
Mickey was fatally shot in the middle of the song. When Ray looked up, he saw that Bridge had actually killed his father. Bridge thought that Mickey needed to be shot to put an end to the chaos and the suffering. Bridge broke down in tears when she saw her father’s state, and Ray encouraged Bunch to take her away. Ray assumed responsibility for his father’s murder and requested that Dr. Amiot contact the police. While Mickey’s body was being removed, the police detained Ray.
Ray Donovan Ending Explained: Does Ray Die?
Although the interpretation of Ray’s death is left to the viewer, it is possible that Ray died as a result of his wounds or that he managed to survive. Ray has a good likelihood of remaining alive given that he is ultimately taken by an ambulance. The sequence where Ray emerges from the swimming pool in his coat toward the end of the movie represents the birth of a new Ray, according to an interview with actor and co-writer Liev Schreiber. In keeping with the Roman Catholic ritual of baptism, the movie suggests that Ray only became a new person after forgiving his father. Ray gradually came to understand how challenging his father’s life was, particularly after serving 20 years in prison.
